"You put on that badge because you know if you don’t, someone who shouldn’t will. But you have to understand, this mask is my badge, and I'm trying to be good too. I was trying so hard to wear this thing the way you would want, and I didn't... I didn't. I can do all these things, but I can't help the people I love the most, and they can only know half of who I am, so I-I'm completely on my own, and now I don't even know what the right thing is anymore! I don't now what I'm supposed to do, but I know... I can't lose one more friend."
―Gwen Stacy[src]

Gwendolyne Maxine Stacy also known by her crime fighting alias Spider-Woman is the tritagonist of Phil Lord and Chris Miller's Spider-Verse trilogy.

She is a teenage girl from Chelsea, New York City who gained superhuman abilities similar to those of a spider after being bitten by a radioactive spider. She is a student at Chelsea Visions Academy and was formerly a drummer in the band known as The Mary Janes.

After the death of her best friend Peter Parker she stopped herself from making friends in an attempt to not go through the pain and guilt of loss again. She was transported into another universe after the creation of Kingpin's collider. She met Miles Morales and several other spider-people and helped them to shut down the collider to prevent it from destroying the universe Miles lived in.

Sixteen months after the incident with Kingpin's collider, Gwen yearned to reconnect with her best friend and massive crush Miles Morales. After almost being arrested by her father she joined Miguel's Spider-Society to prevent the collapse of universes. Once meeting up with Miles again she unintentionally caused a series of events that lead him to the Spider-Society.

Once witnessing Miles being berated at and hunted by the very people she looked up to as mentors, Gwen lashed out at Miguel but was sent home for disobeying his orders. She reconnected with her father and realized just how she had hurt the best friend that she loved and cared about so much. Now Gwen is on a mission to rescue Miles and return him home so he can save his father from the Spot and hopefully regain his trust and friendship.

History[]

Early Life[]

Growing up in Chelsea[]

Gwendolyn Maxine Stacy was born in the early 2000s in Chelsea, New York. She was raised by her father George Stacy as her mother dying when she was young. She was next door neighbors with the Parker family who were friends of her father's and the two families would often share dinner where Gwen would begin to befriend Peter Parker. Gwen would not have many friends and considered Peter her best and only friend.

She would enroll in Chelsea Visions Academy when she was a teenager along with her best friend Peter. Gwen would meet and befriend Mary Jane, Betty Brant and Glory Grant and join them in their band The Mary Janes where she served as their drummer. She would take ballet lessons and also be a part of the school's gymnastics team. Peter would suffer immensely from bullying at the hands of Ned Leeds. Gwen would constantly try to stand up for him but it would only make the bullying worse as it made Peter seem weak.

Becoming Spider-Woman[]

In late 2016, Gwen would get a bite from a radioactive spider on her left hand. Soon after she would gain powers similar to those of a spider, gaining the ability to crawl up walls, enhanced strength, enhanced speed and a precognitive ability known as spider-sense. Gwen would create a costume for herself along with webshooters as she set herself on a goal to defend crime in Chelsea under the alias Spider-Woman. She'd use a deeper voice whenever she used this alias in an attempt to further conceal her identity.

Peter would quickly gain an obsession with Gwen's alter ego and begin fantasizing about gaining powers like Spider-Woman to stand up to his relentless bullies such as Ned. He'd often talk to Gwen about Spider-Woman and she'd make sure to never reveal to him that it was her she was talking and admiring. Gwen's father did not approve of the vigilante's behavior but had a reluctant and begrudging respect for Spider-Woman as she had saved his life from a potentially fatal gunshot.

Losing Peter and isolating herself[]

Peter and Gwen would decide that they would be attending prom together. Gwen arrived in her prom dress expecting to see Peter but instead was greeted by the sight of a giant lizard-like monster attacking the dance. Gwen quickly changed into her Spider-Woman suit and took on the beast as it attempted to murder Ned Leeds. The lizard briefly pinned Gwen to a wall but she carelessly kicked the reptile into a pillar causing a massive chunk of the ceiling to fall on top of it. Gwen rushed to the crushed rubble only to find no lizard but a fatally injured Peter. Gwen grabbed Peter as he struggled to speak and he told Gwen that he just wanted to be special, just like her. With Peter using her real name Gwen panicked as she realized that her best friend had known she was Spider-Woman the entire time. Gwen pleaded with him to hang on but Peter simply told her that it would all be ok as he died in her arms. Gwen cradled Peter's body and sobbed into before quickly fleeing upon sensing that her father had found her. This ended up making it appear to George that Spider-Woman had murdered his daughter's best friend and gotten away with it.

Spider-Woman would be subjected to a series of long manhunts from none other than Captain George Stacy. Public opinion would be divided on the vigilante as Spider-Woman was bashed by the press including J. Jonah Jameson of the Daily Bugle. Regardless, Spider-Woman still defended the city from various adversaries including Doctor Octopus and The Vulture, the latter of which was a common occurrence for the superheroine. Gwen stopped making friends after Peter's death as she couldn't bear to go through the pain and guilt of losing someone close to her again. She began to become increasingly socially isolated and awkward and used her place in The Mary Janes as an outlet for her grief and anger as she channeled it into her drumming. Gwen and her father would occasionally get into arguments about the Spider-Woman case but George would never realize his daughter was the vigilante he was hunting.

Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse[]

Arriving in another universe[]

One day while Gwen was fighting against Doctor Octopus, something bizarre happened. A portal opened and transported her across universes right as Doctor Octopus was about to grab her. She landed a week in the past into a completely different universe, realizing this after seeing billboards displaying news about the local city's Spider-Man. Gwen's spider-sense urged her to find Miles Morales at Brooklyn Visions Academy even before he was bitten by a radioactive spider. Gwen would somehow get herself into the school, even getting a uniform. She'd end up meeting Miles in physics class where he'd tell a relatively unfunny joke about Einstein to explain being late. Gwen would giggle at the fact that the joke was incredibly unfunny and Miles would sit next to her.

Meeting Miles Morales[]

The following day, Gwen would confront Miles again, intentionally allowing him to bump into her. Profusely sweating, Miles tried his best to keep his composure but Gwen took notice of it and asked him what the deal was with him. Miles would claim that it was simply puberty but quickly corrected himself by saying he was a man and didn't have to go through puberty anymore. Miles introduced himself and Gwen followed suit, initially wanting to introduce herself properly but she would changed her name to Gwanda last minute to avoid confusion in the event Miles knew a Gwen Stacy in his universe. Gwen would claim she was African, quickly correcting herself to say she was South African. Miles would initiate the shoulder touch as his uncle had taught him in his attempt to win Gwen over. As the two prepared to part ways, Miles would come to the shocking revelation that his hand was now stuck to Gwen's hair. Miles would drag Gwen around the school as he attempted to remove his hand from her hair. Miles would tell Gwen he was going to use a lot of force to remove his hand and Gwen knew this was an awful idea. Gwen used her legs to duck under him and throw him over her head. Later, Gwen would have Miles's hand shaved out of her hair leaving a gigantic handprint in it. Sometime after, Gwen saw Miles running around the side of a building wearing nothing but a pair of pants with birds stuck to his hand as she realized he must be going through the finding his powers stage of things.

Infiltrating Alchemax[]

At some point, Gwen would get herself an actual haircut to remove the gigantic handprint that was left in her hair which gave her an undercut hairstyle. Gwen went undercover at Alchemax in order to track down the hard drive, using a glasses and labcoat as a disguise. She'd briefly bump into Miles as he and Peter B. Parker attempted to escape Doctor Octopus but he would fail to recognize her. When all hope seemed lost for Miles and Peter, Gwen arrived to defeat Doctor Octopus and she'd do it pretty swiftly. After defeating the scientist, Gwen unmasked and revealed her actual name to Miles and Peter. Miles complimented Gwen on the new haircut and she'd tell him that he wasn't allowed to like it although she was evidently blushing at his compliment.

Miles, Gwen and Peter would take a bus ride back to the city from Alchemax. With Peter dozing off, Miles and Gwen would get to know each other on the long bus ride and Miles offered Gwen to be her friend. Gwen would smile as she told him that she would consider his offer. Miles and Gwen would take a selfie together at some point during this bus ride.

Meeting the others[]

The three of them arrived at the house of the deceased Peter Parker in Queens. After an emotional exchange between Peter B. Parker and May Parker, the three would be introduced to the spider-lair that 1610's Spider-Man had constructed to make all his suit and tech. They would also meet several other Spider-people: Peter Parker a.k.a Spider-Man Noir, Peni Parker a.k.a SP//dr and Peter Porker a.k.a Spider-Ham. The group discussed who should stay behind to make sure that the collider is stopped but everyone except Miles would glitch in intense pain. Miles willingly volunteered to be the one to do it as he was the only one who wouldn't die by staying in his universe. The spider-gang would test Miles and he'd be overwhelmed and leave, Gwen would sadly watch feeling bad for the way she had treated Miles.

Talking with Miles[]

Sometime later, Peni would complete the override key and Gwen would ask if any word had been found about Miles's whereabouts. Out of nowhere, Miles arrives and frantically tells the others that his uncle is the Prowler and working for Kingpin. The Spider-Gang would ask if Miles had been followed and he'd insist he hadn't just for Scorpion, Tombstone and Prowler to ambush the group. The group would fight off the attackers, Gwen specifically taking on the scorpion.

A while after the fight, the group would visit Miles in his dorm room as they tried to encourage him on after the death of his uncle. Gwen felt awful for Miles as she related to him losing someone with her experience with Peter. Miles doesn't just feel bad about losing him however, he blames himself which is a feeling Gwen knows all too well. Ganke, Miles' roommate enters the room and the group has to huddle on the wall to avoid being caught. Unfortunately he sees them and passes out once Spider-Ham talks. The reluctant decision is made for Peter to be the one to sacrifice himself to take down the collider. Miles' is webbed up and left in the dorm as everyone leaves.

Infiltrating the party and shutting down the collider[]

The group infiltrates Kingpin's party and overhears him giving a speech about how much he respected Spider-Man. Gwen calls Kingpin a pig much to the annoyance of Spider-Ham. Noir realizes that all the waiters are dressed as Spider-Man and they all decide to disguise themselves as waiters by donning bow ties. Gwen has to stop Peter from talking to the 1610 version of MJ.

The Spider-Gang enters the collider and Peter is about to initiate the plan but Kingpin's henchmen arrive to battle the heroes. Although outnumbered and glitching out, the group is shocked and emboldened to see Miles arrive wearing a brand new suit. Gwen takes on Doc Ock and is nearly defeated but Miles grabs her from falling into the portal and helps her to fight the villain as they team up. Miles, Gwen and Peter ready themselves to finally best Octavius for good only for a truck to hit her causing her to be put out of the fight.

The henchmen are taken care of and it's time for the spider-people to return to their regular universes. Gwen is second last and Miles asks her if he can like her haircut now. She jokingly tells Miles that she's 15 months older than him only for him to reiterate the Einstein joke he had said when they first met. Miles would ask Gwen if she wanted to be friends and he'd shake his hand as she agreed. She'd gracefully leap into the portal as she said her goodbyes. Gwen wanted to kiss Miles right there but unfortunately never managed to have the confidence to do so. Upon returning to her universe Gwen would sit on a skyscraper rooftop looking at the picture she had taken with Miles on the bus as she smiled.

Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse[]

Quitting her band[]

Sixteen months had passed after the destruction of the super collider and her experience with Miles and the others. Gwen had grown even more isolated than she previously had been before meeting Miles as she desperately missed her best friend. She had developed a very intense crush on Miles and would think about him to the point that she'd see him everywhere she went. She ended up keeping the undercut hairstyle in tribute to her time with Miles as it reminded her of him, she'd also get a printout of the selfie she had taken with Miles on the bus and placed it in her drumset where she hid her Spider-Woman suit next to a gift from her deceased mother. Gwen's isolation had gotten bad to the point that she completely quit her position as drummer in The Mary Janes as she felt angered after they attempted to get her to open up about what was bothering her.

After quitting the band, Gwen would come home to her father and nonchalantly told him about what had happened with the band. Gwen would begin to sort out her clothes while George tried to talk to her about the Spider-Woman case to which he simply told him that it would never bring back Peter. Trying to ease tension, George asked his daughter if she was too "punk rock" to not give her dad a hug. Gwen would run up to her father and embrace him in a tight hug that was quickly broken after the police radio George had reported about the Vulture being spotted at the Guggenheim museum. Gwen would quickly change into her suit after her father left and swung to the scene of the crime.

Battle at Guggenheim[]

Gwen quickly webbed up her father and his partners to avoid them getting caught in the crossfire. She entered the museum expecting another fight with the Vulture that she was used to only to find an Italian speaking Renaissance era version of the villain. Gwen would attempt to hold her own against the confused man but would be pinned down by him against a wall. Out of nowhere, Miguel O'Hara would leap out of a portal and stop the Vulture from striking Gwen. Confused on the figure before her, Gwen would ask who he was and he'd explain himself after Gwen cracked a few jokes about his appearance. The duo would take on the Vulture, being joined by another universe's Spider-Woman, Jessica Drew. Gwen would immediately be impressed by Jessica's skills and would ask her to adopt her before resuming the battle. Miguel would latch onto the Vulture and attempt to bite him but a helicopter would be struck down and began to descend on the citizens in the gallery.

Gwen began to feel overwhelmed and focused, thinking of her foot hitting her drum in rhythm to ground herself as she leapt into the air and began shooting webs to create a gigantic web to contain the helicopter. The 3 spider-people rescued various citizens and with their combined strength prevented the helicopter from crashing and instead allowed it to land properly into the net that Gwen had created with her webbing. An exhausted Gwen was ready to leave only for her spider-sense to go off as she saw her own father pointing a gun at her. Gwen attempted to use her webshooters to swing out of the way or incapacitate her father but she was out of web fluid. Her father fired a warning shot and Gwen decided that she had no other option other than revealing her identity. With her mask off, Gwen pleaded to her father to understand that she never intended for Peter to die but he was in absolute shock and still wanted her arrested. Before George could do anything, Miguel webbed the gun out of his hand and enclosed him in a small force cage. Gwen was sobbing with tears in her eyes as Jess comforted her and she made the difficult decision to join the Spider-Society as it was really the only option she could take at this point.

Life in the Spider-Society[]

Upon joining the Spider-Society, Gwen was placed under the guidance of Jessica Drew and would go on to view her as a mentor figure as she transversed the universe capturing anomalies with her. Miguel would tell Gwen about what the spider-society did and what her own canon events were, including her supposed death. Gwen would also meet Pavitr Prabhaker and Hobie Brown, the latter of which would become one of her closest friends as he allowed her to crash at his universe and was a pseudo big brother to her as she struggled with her feelings of loneliness and isolation even allowing her to join his punk rock band. She would also reunite with Peter B. Parker and Peni Parker who were both members of the spider-society, however the 3 of them were strictly instructed to not contact or reach Miles as he was a supposed anomaly. Although Gwen was not able to see Miles, she continued to keep her undercut hairstyle to remember him, letting it grow longer and dying the tips of it pink. She'd also begin wearing chucks with her suit instead of her ballet flats, a gesture most likely inspired by Miles own use of his jordans with his suit.

Reuniting with Miles[]

Gwen would finally get a mission on Earth-1610B, Miles' universe. She was explicitly instructed not to meet Miles and to simply take care of the Spot but Gwen's longing for her crush was too much for her. Miles was relaxing in his room listening to music when a portal opened up above him. Gwen called out to him startling him as she landed shoes first onto his bed, immediately embracing him in a tight hug. Gwen jokingly poked at Miles telling him that he had a growth spurt. She walked around his room and even took a collectible figure out of it's packaging, visibly distressing Miles. Seeing a sketchbook on his bed, Gwen used her webshooters to snatch it into her hands as she browsed through it seeing various drawings of her causing Miles to feel embarrassed. She told him that she missed him as well and asked if he wanted to go out with her. Miles told her he was grounded and Gwen jokingly asked him if Spider-Man was grounded. Miles decided to join his best friend on a swing throughout the city, Gwen accidentally left her sweater in his room.

Gwen and Miles swung throughout the city, Gwen being quite the chatterbox as she told Miles about all the adventures she had gone on with her new friends at the Spider-Society. Miles was visibly jealous after Gwen mentioned that she had been staying at Hobie's universe. Gwen and Miles snatched some hot dogs to eat, Miles' paying for it. They strung up a robber who was attempting to steal a bicycle. Gwen briefly disappeared from Miles' line of sight as she planted a tracker to spy on Spot before she joined up back with him. They eventually made their way to the top of the Williamsburg Bank Building, a building that historically in other universes was the place of Gwen's death. Gwen and Miles walked upside down, sitting upside down on the building as they continued their chat. Gwen and Miles expressed how much they enjoyed being around each other and Gwen told Miles that in every other universe Gwen Stacy falls for Spider-Man and it doesn't end well. Miles replied telling her that there's a first time for everything. Gwen feeling a bit relieved smiled and leaned on his shoulder as they enjoyed the view.

Meeting Miles' Parents[]

Gwen and Miles made it to Miles' father's rooftop promotion party. They ate food as they talked more about their feelings and Miles briefly toyed around with Gwen's interdimensional watch. They began to lean closer together feeling that something was about to happen only for Miles' mother Rio to interrupt them as she introduced herself. Jefferson joined as well, accidentally hitting his head. Gwen tried to introduce herself to his parents but her lack of social skills from the loss of Peter and her mother had caused her to not have much experience as she clumsily referred to them by their first names and made a cheeky joke about Jefferson being captain. Gwen's watch began beeping and she did a little dance explaining that she had to get her steps in. Gwen shook Miles' hand before leaving as she sadly departed from her friend.

Gwen swung throughout the city, not realizing Miles was following her after a talk he had with his mother about experiencing the world. She arrived at the Spot's apartment and viewed the recording that the device she had placed to keep watch on him had taken. Spot had been creating a device to help him gain more power in the multi-verse. Gwen was interrupted by a call from Jess who warned her to stick to her mission and to cut off Miles and never speak to him again. Feeling no other choice was possible, Gwen sadly told Miles goodbye not realizing he was right there in the room with her as she departed through the portal to Mumbattan. Miles decided to go after her after a minute of thinking.

Battle at Mumbattan[]

Upon arriving in Mumbattan, Gwen quickly realized that she had been followed by Miles who had no watch and would constantly glitch because of it. Pavitr would meet up with them and joke about the serious romantic tension between the two even though Miles and Gwen would be too embarrassed to admit that he was right in front of him. The three would fight off Spot and headed to the Alchemax building in the city as they attempted to stop him from using the collider to gain even more power. The Spot locked them behind a barrier as Miles attempted to use his venom shock to absorb the electricity powering the shield.

Thankfully for them, Hobie Brown arrived and easily broke through the barrier using the power of his guitar. Miles was instantly impressed by Hobie but also jealous still thinking that he and Gwen had a fling or something similar. Hobie joked that Gwen had left her jumper at his place and stolen his chucks. The four attempted to stop Spot but it was too late as he absorbed the collider's energy and escaped causing the entire building to collapse. Gwen frantically grabbed Miles' arm and dragged him out of the building and the four of them all worked on rescuing as many citizens as possible.

Gwen realized Miles was going to save the police captain and attempted to prevent him from doing so both for his own safety and the risk of breaking a "canon event". Seeing the rubble collapse under her friend, a terrified Gwen rushed to it pulling the rubble away as she worried that Miles had gone the same way her first best friend had. To her relief, Miles had survived and he had saved the captain and the child although he had still broken the "canon event". Gwen told him that he was amazing as the spider-society arrived to contain the event.

Introducing Miles to the society[]

Jess took Gwen, Miles and Hobie to the society to introduce Miles to Miguel. Gwen looked in fear as Miles briefly glitched but Jess gave him a day pass so he would remain safe for the time being. Gwen showed Miles all the different anomalies that she had helped capture. The three arrived at the go-home machine where Margo would introduce herself to Miles. Miles wanting to get back at Gwen for in his mind doing something with Hobie flirted with Margo briefly causing Gwen to use her webshooter to pull him away back to her.

They arrived at Miguel's office and he angrily began to vent at Miles about what he had done. He had LYLA show him the presentation about canon events and revealed to him that his father Jefferson Morales was supposed to die in 2 days at the hands of the Spot in order for the universe's canon event to be fulfilled. Miles felt awful and told Gwen that she should have never come to see him as she teared up at the sounds of her crush telling her this. Miles was enclosed in a force cage similar to the one that had captured Gwen's father but Hobie quickly told Miles how to break out. Using his venom shock he absorbed the power of the cage and shot it back out across the room, knocking everyone back. Hobie smiled as Miles began to escape from Miguel's grasp.

Chasing Miles[]

Gwen joined chase with the rest of the spider-society. She was visibly conflicted as she loved Miles and her gut was telling her that this was the wrong thing to do, Jess however reminded her to use her head. Gwen briefly caught Miles with one of her webs as she began to tear up looking at him. Miles angrily snapped the web as he shook her head leaving Gwen in shock and sadness. Gwen continued chasing him, even launching Jess forwards on her motorcycle with one of her webs. Eventually Miguel had cornered Miles on a train headed straight for the moon and had ripped off his day pass causing him to glitch every so often. Peter B. who was next to Gwen yelled at Miguel to go easy on Miles as this wasn't what "they talked about". Miles came to the somber realization that both Peter and Gwen had talked about this. Gwen tried to justify herself telling Miles she didn't know how to tell him and that it was for his own good. Getting angrier, Miles realized that he could depower Miguel's suit and used his venom shock to do so as he launched him off the train. Miles stood up and said a goodbye to Gwen as he jumped off the train with Miguel pursuing him. Gwen softly smiled at the fact Miles had beaten Miguel and gotten away.

Sent home[]

Once Miles had escaped to his "home" universe, Gwen and the others arrived to see an angry Miguel. Gwen feeling awful about what she had done to Miles berated Miguel but he was done with her at this point. Miguel had the go-home machine grab Gwen by her shoulders and ankles and had her sent back home to her universe but not before Gwen angrily told him that she thought they were supposed to be the good guys. Arriving on a rooftop in her universe, Gwen found that her watch no longer allowed her to go to any universes. Angered, she launched a crate off the rooftop as she struggled not to cry. Gwen headed back to her home to retrieve the one photo she had of herself with Miles only for her father to confront her. Gwen finally opened up to him as she vented about all the things she had done and the struggle of balancing her two lives and protecting the person she loves, Miles while not saying him by name. George moved by his daughter's words, quit the police force right then and there. Gwen realized she had unintentionally broken her father's canon event and nothing had happened to her universe hinting at the possibility that Miguel may be wrong. Gwen hugged her father and he gave her a portal watch that Hobie had given to him. Gwen departed through the portal to Miles' universe as she promised to return to her father as soon as she could.

Promise to his parents[]

Upon arriving in 1610B, Gwen immediately set a trap for Ben Reilly and had his watch taken and him sent to her own universe where he couldn't track Miles. Gwen snuck into Miles' room and overheard his parents arguing about what had happened to him, even mentioning her a couple times. Gwen's spider-sense went off as she realized he was in the wrong universe. It went off again as she sensed him getting knocked out by the alternate universe version of himself. Gwen put on Miles' jacket in an attempt to not only hide her suit but remember him and get some comfort. She opened the door and confronted his parents, telling them about how it was her fault that Miles was gone. Jefferson and Rio were furious and angrily asked her where he was, Jefferson even calling her an emo for wearing his jacket. Gwen told them that she had no idea where Miles had gone but that she was going to find him no matter what and that he had taught her that everything was possible. She also told Rio and Jeff that Miles loved them more than anything with Rio replying telling her to tell him that they loved him and that he was grounded for 5 months. Gwen left his house and went on her way to begin saving Miles.

Finding a band[]

She arrived in 616B and recruited Peter and his daughter Mayday. She would do the same across various universes and assembled a team consisting of Peter B. Parker, Mayday Parker, Hobie Brown, Pavitr Prabhaker, Margo Kess, Peter Porker, Spider-Man Noir and Peni Parker as they went on a mission to rescue Miles and attempt to help him save his father from certain death. Gwen hopes that she will be able to reconcile with Miles and help him beat the Spot.

Equipment[]

Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse (Part One), Gwen is redesigned slightly from her appearance in the first film, with boots replacing her ballet shoes, and having Gwen Poole's partially dyed pink highlights added to her blonde undercut hair, a design previously adapted to versions of the character in the Marvel Rising media franchise and the Disney Junior children's television series Marvel's Spidey and His Amazing Friends. This was cited by a character designer for Marvel Rising having mistaken an image of Gwen Poole by Gurihiru for Gwen Stacy while using Google Images to reference the former character's physical appearance during the series' development.
