Little is known about the supposed plotline of the film. Apparently Venom would have been portrayed as an antihero and that the villain Carnage was apparently supposed to be the film's antagonist. As a well created villain, Carnage was supposed to be a partner of Spider-Man.
Spider-Man 3 producer Avi Arad revealed a Venom spin-off film was in the works in July 2007. Jacob Aaron Estes was commissioned to write a script, but it was rejected the following year. In September 2008, Paul Wernick and Rhett Reese signed on to write the film. Reese later revealed that they had written two drafts for the film and that the studio was pushing the film forward. In 2009, Gary Ross, who was then rewriting the latest draft of the unproduced Spider-Man 4, was assigned to rewrite the Venom script and direct the movie, in which Venom would be an anti-hero rather than a supervillain.
Venom was ultimately cancelled after Spider-Man 4 was scrapped in 2010. In June 2012, a new Venom movie was being considered as part of Marc Webb's Spider-Man reboot.
